How to Choose Shrink Film Thickness for Bottled Water Packaging

For bottled water manufacturers, shrink film is more than a simple outer package. It helps hold bottles together, protects the pack during transport, supports automatic packaging efficiency and affects the final appearance on pallets or retail shelves.

One of the most common questions from buyers is: what thickness of PE shrink film should I use for bottled water packaging? The answer depends on bottle size, pack weight, packaging machine, transport distance and the strength required by your market.

PE shrink film thickness directly affects package strength, shrink performance and material cost. Thicker film usually provides better puncture resistance, stronger holding force and safer performance for heavy packs.

Thinner film usually offers lower material cost, faster heat transfer during shrinking, lighter packaging weight and better efficiency for smaller or lighter packs.

For bottled water multipacks, common reference ranges include 35-45 micron for light small-bottle packs, 45-60 micron for standard retail packs, 60-80 micron for heavier beverage packs, and 80 micron or above for long-distance transport or rough handling.

Bottle size is the first factor to consider. A 330 ml bottle pack and a 1.5 L bottle pack require very different film strength. Larger bottles and higher bottle counts usually need stronger film to prevent tearing at corners and stress points.

Pack format also matters. If the pack has a tray or carton support, the film mainly provides wrapping and dust protection. If the pack uses shrink film only, the film needs more holding strength.

Transportation conditions should be evaluated carefully. Local delivery may only require moderate thickness, while export containers, rough handling, high pallet stacks or repeated movement require better tensile strength and puncture resistance.

Film thickness must also match the packaging machine and shrink tunnel. If the film is too thick for the heat tunnel setting, shrinking may be incomplete. If the film is too thin, it may burn, wrinkle or break during sealing.

Before confirming a bulk order, check machine type, sealing temperature, tunnel temperature, conveyor speed, film width, roll diameter and packing speed.

Printed PE shrink film may require additional attention because thickness affects print stability and final appearance. The film needs enough flatness and strength for printing, sealing and shrinking.

The most reliable method is sample testing. Confirm bottle size and pack format, select two or three possible thickness options, test on the actual line, check appearance after cooling, and simulate lifting, stacking and transport.
